Boyhood is the big movie that is getting the most buzz this awards seasons. It was nominated for five Golden Globes and won three including Best Motion Picture - Drama. It's also nominated for six Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Ethan Hawke) and Best Supporting Actress (Patricia Arquette).
The reason Boyhood is getting a lot of attention is because it is different from every movie this year in one specific way. It was filmed over a period of 12 years. They started when Ellar Coltrane was just five years old and filmed all the way up until he was eighteen years old. Here's the trailer:

The most impressive thing to me about this movie is how perfectly Coltrane grew up and now looks EXACTLY like Ethan Hawke. That was incredibly lucky casting!
As far as I know, a movie like this hasn't been done before so it is pretty impressive. It can be a dangerous commitment because you never know what could happen in the following twelve years. Luckily for Richard Linklater everything worked out for the better.
I can't even begin to imagine the kind of planning that went on through all twelve years of filming. Especially trying to figure out when they were going to film and trying to coordinate the actors and the production crews schedules (Ethan Hawke did A LOT of movies during this time). I wonder how many times they changed the story through the filming process. I couldn't imagine it was easy to write something and stick with it for twelve years!

I would love to know if they based the characters on the personality of the actors. For example, Lorelei Linklater (who plays the daughter, Samantha) is very sassy at the beginning of the film but then tones it down as the film goes on. Especially considering that Lorelei is the directors daughter I wonder how much of the movie is actually based on their life or at least their personality.
After such a huge commitment to filming for twelve years I would say this movie turned out pretty great. In fact, it is #4 in my top four movies from the year! It was a nice, refreshing movie that stood out because it was actually a happy movie. I've mentioned in previous posts how this year a majority of the movies were just depressing. So it was a welcomed change! Although my sister, Shawn and I were still waiting for something bad to happen just because we were used to it from all the other movies.
Boyhood is one of those movies that is on the "must buy" list, or at least the "must see" list, for a couple of reasons. First, it is kind of a historic movie because of the fact that it took twelve years to film. Movies like that are just not being made because it takes a huge commitment. The second reason is that it is one of those movies that I know I will want to watch over and over again and also show to my kids because it revolves around growing up and all of the hardships that you might encounter when you are growing up. And of course it's even more realistic because you actually get to watch the kids and parents grow up.
Although there is a very strong chance that it will win the Academy Award for Best Picture I don't know if I agree with that. I know I have been rambling on about how amazing it is and it is a fantastic movie but is it really worthy of a Best Picture win? In my opinion, no. It's not one of those movies that just wows the audience or really sucks the audience into the story and makes them leave thinking "that's the best movie I've seen all year!" I am glad that it is nominated but there are three movies that I think should win before Boyhood but you will have to wait until Friday and next week to find out what those are!
If you haven't seen Boyhood yet I would highly recommend seeing it. I can't recall hearing any bad reviews about it! Shawn and I bought it at Costco a couple days it came out and I'm so glad we did. I think Boyhood is a movie that will forever be in my Top 25 Movies list.
Let me know what you thought about Boyhood! Do you think it should win the Oscar for Best Picture???
Make sure to come back on Friday, February 13th to read about my third favorite movie of the year!
