The Theory of Everything

Before reading my thoughts about The Theory of Everything I would encourage you to watch the trailer first:
When I first saw the trailer for this movie I was very excited about it because it looked like it would be a fantastic, magical movie (and also Eddie Redmayne is in it and he is one of my favorites). So this was a movie that I was looking forward to seeing. When I finally sat down to watch it, with Shawn, his mom, and her boyfriend, we had to pause it about halfway through because we needed a break.
Don't get me wrong! I love Eddie Redmayne and I think Felicity Jones is great too but the movie as a whole was just not as great as I was expecting it to be. Eddie did win the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama and I think that was very well deserved. I'm sure it was difficult to portray Stephen Hawking but he really did a great job. He is also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor for this roll. I do think he definitely stands a chance to win it too. Felicity Jones was nominated for a Golden Globe but she is not nominated for an Oscar.
For the most part, every movie follows the same flow of introducing the story, leading up to the climax, the climax of the whole story, and then wrapping up the story. However, with this movie there was never really a change in tempo. It's hard to explain it but I felt that the movie as a whole was just flat. There was never a moment when I was fully interested in the movie. I don't remember feeling as though we hit the climax of the movie. The story just carried on at the same tempo with the same "lack of enthusiasm", if you will. So I never felt truly interested in the movie and then all of a sudden it was over.
So much had happened in the movie that I wasn't even entirely sure what was going on. I'm not sure how many years the movie is supposed to cover but while watching the movie it seemed as though important life events were happening but nobody aged. Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones looked the exact same from the beginning of the movie all the way until maybe the last 10 minutes of the movie. So I am definitely glad it isn't nominated for makeup for the Oscars. The only way to tell that a certain amount of time had passed was by what was going on in their lives - getting married, having kids, and so on, I don't want to give away spoilers.
Overall, I would say this movie is what Shawn and I call a "One and done." I have little to no interest in watching this movie again. I'm glad that Eddie Redmayne is being recognized for this roll but overall the movie just slowly dragged on. It was hard to stay connected with the story because the timeline was unclear and, like I said before, it was just flat.
If you saw The Theory of Everything let me know what you thought about it! Especially if you liked it!
My next post, which will cover one of my favorite movies of the year, will be up in just a few days! So I hope you'll come back to check it out!
