Like I said in my post on Monday, I really enjoyed the show overall. But I enjoyed it even more because most of the films/people I wanted to win did win!
Before watching all of the short films this year I had picked The Dam Keeper to be the winner in the animated category based on the reviews and predictions I had read. After watching the short films I LOVED Feast, done by Disney. But I decided to stick with my original choice so I continued to root for The Dam Keeper. Unsurprisingly Feast did win the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film and I'm happy about that! It was a really cute short film, it's Disney so it's exactly what I would expect from them. So this award was well deserved.
As far as the live action short films go I knew that The Phone Call was going to win the Oscar but I was still rooting for Parvaneh because I really enjoyed that one. Although it didn't have as huge of an emotion effect on me as The Phone Call did it still stuck in my mind. I think now more than ever women are judged and mistreated because they wear the hijab and Parvaneh showed that. But with The Phone Call, it was a very tough subject (suicide) that a lot of people have encountered in their life so of course it was going to win. But, like the short animated film, it was a well deserved win.

If you have been keeping up with my blog posts you know how much I was hoping J.K. Simmons would win Best Supporting Actor, and he did win! It was the first award of the night and it made me so happy!! Whiplash actually won three Oscars on Sunday. It also won Best Film Editing and Sound Mixing. And I agree with the Academy voters that Whiplash was the best is those categories. The sound in Whiplash, especially when you watch it in the theatres, is incredible. If you don't know by now, Whiplash is about jazz music so obviously sound mixing was going to be a huge part of the movie. So, once again, very well deserved.
The Theory of Everything only won one Oscar on Sunday night and it was given to Eddie Redmayne for Best Actor. I am very happy that he won but honestly I do wish that Michael Keaton would have won the Oscar. Both performances were outstanding but I think Michael Keaton was just a bit more deserving. So it was bittersweet for me to see Eddie Redmayne win.
Let's talk about Patricia Arquette. Should we even talk about her? Or would it be a waste of time? Obviously I am not happy about her win. If you disagree with me do me a favor - watch Birdman and then watch Boyhood. If not back to back then watch Birdman one night and then Boyhood the next. Now lets compare Emma Stone's performance to Patricia Arquette's performance. What's that you say? "Caitlin, it's like comparing apples and oranges. Stones character is a recovering drug addict while Arquette's character is a single mom." Exactly. Stones role in Birdman was passionate and intense and SO NOT like her normal roles. While Patricia Arquette plays a struggling single mom who always ends up with the wrong guy. There's not really any dramatic scenes where you know that she had to break out of her comfort zone and really push herself to get the scene right. Emma Stone was much more deserving of this award and it is disappointing that she didn't win. I hope that it doesn't discourage her against doing serious roles because I would love to see her do more movies like Birdman.

The Grand Budapest Hotel won four of the nine awards it was nominated for. It won Best Production Design, Original Score, Makeup and Hairstyling, and Costume Design. I was thrilled that it won for production design because the work that goes into the sets on Wes Andersons films is very detailed. For those who don't know, he uses a lot of miniatures. In a video I watched recently Anderson said that he likes to shoot his films that way because it adds more of a real feel to the film instead of using CGI effects to enhance a scene.
I was actually a bit shocked when TGBH won for Original Score, happy but shocked. I thought for sure that The Theory of Everything would win so that was a nice surprise. As for the other two wins I had a feeling TGBH would win and I'm happy it did because the costumes and makeup in the movie are really pretty cool. If you still haven't seen The Grand Budapest Hotel yet I would highly recommend it.

And finally, the 2015 Oscar Best Picture winner, Birdman. I am so happy that this movie won. It is so different from just about any movie released nowadays because of how it was shot. The Best Picture movie is supposed to be the movie that is the best, that stood out from all the other movies, and that made an impact in the film industry and Birdman is absolutely that movie. On top of the win for best picture, Birdman also won for directing, original screenplay, and cinematography. There is so much to talk about regarding the cinematography that I am doing a whole separate post on it! That will be up on Tuesday, March 3rd. |
Well until next year this is the last of my Academy Awards themed posts! I'm sad that it's over but I'm also excited to see what next year brings!
I'll also be doing a post soon about my future plans for this blog. It's certainly a new hobby of mine that I enjoy doing every week. I have a lot of ideas for where I want to go with this so I hope that you will continue to come back and read what I am sharing! And, as always, please leave a comment! Even if it's just to say hello!
